Monolithic subterranean Church of St Jean, France, Western Europe

The largest underground church in Europe

The structure appears older than that recorded and originally was supposed to be hewn from caves already on the site. A necropolis was uncovered with over 80 stone coffins in the 1960s. The knave is more than 20 metres high and the whole structure looks like it would have required more than hand tools to build.

Local Name: Eglise Souterraine
