Prasat Hin Phanomwan Reservoir, Thailand, Southeast Asia

One of many huge rectangular pools/reservoirs attributed to the Khmer. The size is what is outstanding and the stone linings. This one is about 400 meters by 300 meters. The effort required to dig out such pools and stone line them would seem considerable. Also of note is that fact that they are aligned with the adjacent Khmer building. But not aligned to the cardinal points of today. Angkor Wat and reservoirs by contrast are aligned with the current cardinal points. Are the ancient 'Khmer' sites aligned with the 'old' cardinal points?
